The Owsley County Jail, located in Booneville, Kentucky, was established in 1845 to serve as the county's primary correctional facility. The original jail consisted of a simple log cabin with wooden bars and was known for its harsh conditions and overcrowding.

Growth and Expansion

As the county's population grew, so did the need for a larger and more modern jail facility. In 1978, a new jail was constructed adjacent to the original log cabin. This new jail featured concrete cells, modern plumbing, and improved security measures.

  • 1977 Jailbreak: In 1977, four inmates escaped from the jail by sawing through the bars of their cell and climbing over the jail wall. The inmates were eventually apprehended and returned to custody.
  • 1992 Riot: In 1992, a riot broke out in the jail after inmates became upset over overcrowding and poor living conditions. The riot was quelled by law enforcement officers, and several inmates were injured.
  • 2007 Suicide: In 2007, an inmate committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell. The inmate had been in jail for several months awaiting trial for murder.

Future Plans

The Owsley County Jail is currently planning a major renovation and expansion project to address overcrowding and improve inmate living conditions. The project is expected to include the construction of a new cell block, the expansion of the jail's medical and mental health facilities, and the addition of new programming and educational spaces.
